Lymphogranuloma Venereum is one of the more uncommon sexually transmitted diseases. This is also known as Lymphogranuloma inguinale and tropical bubo. This is more common in tropical and subtropical parts of the world but there have been reports of cases in the U.S and Europe. This bacterium is transmitted primarily through sexual contact, whether oral, genital or anal, and with any direct contact with open lesions. It is believed to be transmissible via skin to skin contact.

Symptoms often show as small painless papules, nodules or ulcers which may form on the penis or within the urethra in men, and on the vulva, vaginal wall or cervix in women. This lesion frequently may go unnoticed. It may take from 3-30 days before the primary lesion appears. Also, lymph nodes in the area near the infection typically swell and the presence of inguinal or femoral buboes may be seen.
Since this is a type of sexually transmitted disease, it is dangerous if left untreated. Elephantiasis of the genitals in both men and women may occur. It may also make one more susceptible to acquiring HIV and other STDs.
Positively, LV is curable. Just like any other bacterial STDs, it can be treated with antibiotics. However, re-infection may still occur even if one has completed treatment. It is recommonded that if one has seen symptoms, he or she should immediately consult the doctor or take an STD test. Some STDs are traitors; they only show symptoms if the case is already severe and difficult to treat. So as soon as symptoms are noticed, the patient should give attention to it right away. This will prevent further complications to happen to the patient. Also, this will help in stopping the spread of the disease to other people.
If suspecting to be infected with STD, the person may need to take an STD test. This will confirm if he or she is infected with STI. There are affordable STD testing that is conducted in hospitals and local health sites if the person is thinking of the cost of the testing procedure. Or if the patient would like to have the results on the same day, a quick STD testing may be given. They can have the results in as quickly as twenty minutes. And if one needs some privacy on his or her testing, STD testing clinics are now offering private, confidential or anonymous STD testing. This provides more confidentiality to the identity of the patient and his or her test results.
LV is a preventable disease. As long as a person has the right attitude towards sex, he or she will be infection-free. It is important to safe than sorry. If he or she can practice abstinence, then that is the best way to be uninfected. If not, the use of condoms can reduce one's risk of becoming infected with these dangerous diseases. Another way is to limit your sex partners. Remember that having multiple sex partners and frequent changing of partners may put one at high risk from infection. One may need to be faithful or loyal to his or her partner. Besides, being safe is also being healthy.
